Bylaw compliance checker
We are building the bylaw compliance checker, a tool that tests a design against the local building bylaws while the design can still change.
Open the compliance checkerCompliance is usually confirmed at the end, once the drawings are finished and a consultant or the sanctioning authority finds what does not pass.
A setback a hundred and fifty millimetres short or an area read the wrong way sends a scheme back through the studio weeks after the decisions that caused it.
The checker runs on the model your team is already working in, so a rule is tested the day the decision is made rather than the month the drawings go out.
Every result names the clause it comes from and shows the measured value against the limit, so a failure can be argued or fixed instead of taken on trust.
A failure states how much to change in the unit of the rule, and a floor area card shows what you have used against what you are allowed and how much is still buildable.
Where the model does not carry a fact a rule needs, such as the width of the road outside, the checker says it cannot verify that clause and asks you for the figure rather than assuming a pass.
The issues come back into the model, with failing elements coloured in a view of their own and a list beside them, so the fix happens where the design is.
